LATEST NEWS:
July has also been a busy month for RAT. The month started with an excellent talk from Sprint ST owner Mick Smith, 40+ members turned out to the Mira night to hear some tips on safer riding. Mike runs advanced riding courses, if you would like more information about these please contact Ben Gray on the above email address.
The second run of the month was Geoff's long Mynd run. Despite an absolutely appalling weather forecast, 7 hardy souls left McDonalds and set out for Malvern. Avoiding dual-carriageways and keeping to A and B roads as far as possible, we made our way towards Worcester over damp roads and beneath heavy skies.
The weather cleared from Upton on Severn and we had a dry and bright run towards British Camp at Little Malvern where we took on refreshments and were joined by Nigel and Rich from the Gloucester Pack.
The next section took us toward Hereford before turning north up the A49 all the way to Church Stretton. Soggy is the only way to describe this part of the journey, and as ever, if anyone is going to have a puncture, then it’s bound to happen in pouring rain (Geoff’s Top Tip: If you want to cut some rubber, wet it first - honest it’s true and it’s why we get punctures in the wet).
So we lost 1 bike to the recovery truck (Good job we all had breakdown cover eh guys!), another turned for home and our pack leader was temporarily delayed, whilst the rest of us gingerly carried on.
We passed through the quaint old town of Church Stretton before the steep, narrow and spectacular climb up ‘The Burway’ onto the summit of the Long Mynd, where the views were only enhanced by the menacing clouds scudding overhead.
The lunch stop was at the Horseshoe Inn, where we were made very welcome and fed well.
For the return, much of the route to Much Wenlock was along the top of Wenlock Edge, and although most of it is heavily wooded, you can still get a sense of being above the surrounding countryside.
Through the patchy and sometimes heavy rain, we continued via Bridgenorth to the final stop at Wolverley, just north of Kidderminster, at a canal side pub and tea shop.
Late in the day, the weather finally started to clear so that we had a good run at the excellent B4189 between Redditch and Warwick, so finishing on a bit of a high.
The feedback seems to be that it was a good route, somewhat spoiled by the weather and that we ought to try again – maybe next year – and hope for better conditions.
So a fairly uneventful but successful day out. Thanks to all who came along.
